King Arthur

For the 2011 Cape Festival’s “King Arthur”-Project (stage director: Robert Lehmeier; Dramaturg: Laura Ellersdorfer; conductors: Gerben Grooten and Michael Dingaan), Umculo brought together the choirs of Hlengisa Middle School (Nyanga), Kenmere Primary (Kensington), Kensington Girls’ Chorale, and Bloekombos Secondary School (Kraaifontein) with the Cape Festival Baroque Ensemble (harpsichord: Erik Dipenaar).

Soloists were Mlamli Lalapantsi, Angela Kerrison, Phiwe Makaula, Nombuso Ndlandla, Itumeleng Pooe and Charles Ainslie. Training was provided by school choir conductors Monica Silimela, Lizl Gaffley and Siyabulelo Sulelo, coaches Indra Raj and Unathi Malunga, and the Cape Festival education team – Marion Haak and Lea Heinrich – supported and advised by Jonathan Govias, Imke Tramnitz and Alexis Kivi. Performances were held in both Kensington and Nyanga, in the context of cultural encounter workshops for children from both communities.

Salome

Moreover, Umculo was able to bring the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Digital Concert Hall to the IKhaya Trust in Khayalami, near Stellenbosch. The young people who attended the live broadcast and their teachers were introduced to the opera and its themes by Umculo’s educational team, using the method of Scenic Interpretation, developed by R. O. Brinkmann of the Staatsoper Berlin.
